A Quick
History Guide
The Island Is Formed
The third largest island of Australia, Kangaroo Island separated from mainland Australia approximately 10,000 years ago. Rising sea levels caused from the last glacial period caused the islands separation, in what is now known as Backstairs Passage.
The Island Of The Dead
Known as Karta Pintingga ("Island of the Dead") by the mainland Aboriginal people, the existence of stone tools and shell middens shows that Aboriginal people, sometimes referred as the Kartan people, once lived on Kangaroo Island.
The First European Settlement
Reeves Point at Kingscote was the very first European settlement created in South Australia and was originally designated as the likely site for the State’s Capital. Kingscote itself remains as South Australia’s oldest European city and largest one on Kangaroo Island.
